The People Directory lets you find others in your organisation, and provides and easy way for you to contact them.
Depending on how your team have configured it, the People Directory may show people line-by-line or on separate tiles like so:

By clicking on the person or the 
icon, it will show more information about that person like so:
Click on the 
icon to email that person, or the 
icon to chat with them on Teams.
At the top of the People Directory, you will see a search bar and a row of letters. You can use these to search for specific people, or use the letters to filter people with names starting with that letter. If enabled, you may also see filtering options next to the search bar:
